Practical guide

How do you send an HTML form to email?

HTML collects and submits fields; a mail server or form service sends the notification. The reliable flow is browser submission, server validation and storage, provider handoff, then final delivery evidence.

A copyable example

HTML
<form action="https://littlereply.com/api/submit" method="POST" data-littlereply="YOUR_ACCESS_KEY" data-locale="en" data-success="Your message has been received.">
  <input type="hidden" name="_fq_key" value="YOUR_ACCESS_KEY" />
  <input type="text" name="botcheck" tabindex="-1" autocomplete="off" style="display:none" aria-hidden="true" />

  <label for="contact-name">Full name *</label>
  <input type="text" name="name" id="contact-name" required />

  <label for="contact-email">Email address *</label>
  <input type="email" name="email" id="contact-email" required />

  <label for="contact-message">Message *</label>
  <textarea name="message" id="contact-message" required rows="5"></textarea>

  <button type="submit">Send message</button>
  <p role="status" aria-live="polite"></p>
</form>
<!-- Accessible AJAX errors and duplicate-safe retries -->
<script src="https://littlereply.com/client/v1.js" data-api="https://littlereply.com" defer></script>

The key YOUR_ACCESS_KEY is a placeholder to replace with your form’s public key. The code contains no server key or destination address.

Understand the processing chain

The form posts to an HTTPS endpoint. The server validates the schema, applies abuse and quota controls, stores an accepted submission, and schedules eligible notifications.

Each boundary has its own state. A browser confirmation should describe storage, while delivery history describes provider acceptance, delivery, bounce, or a setup problem.

Compare the available approaches

mailto opens a visitor's mail application and is unsuitable for dependable structured intake. A custom backend provides control but requires secure delivery and operations. A hosted backend supplies the endpoint and workflow while your page keeps its design.

Verify a real message

Send a recognizable test, find it in the private inbox, inspect the recipient and provider event, then confirm arrival in a controlled destination inbox. Record failures at the boundary where they occur.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the message stored but no email arrived?

Storage completed, but the recipient, provider, or final mailbox may still require attention. Inspect delivery history.

Can JavaScript send email directly?

Browser code can call a service, but private mail credentials must never be shipped to visitors.
